Blood sugar is too low (hypoglycemia) in people with type 2 diabetes are known to make a limp, and if left unchecked will lead to fainting and death. A new study says, hypoglycemia is also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
The researchers say the lack of proper glycemic targets in diabetes makes them susceptible to blood sugar levels are too low. Hyperglycemia is often categorized as a medical emergency.
Hypoglycemia can occur in diabetics receiving insulin or glucose lowering drugs that potentially cause the blood sugar is too low. Late eating or exercise and work sudden weight without reducing the number of medications or without any additional meals can also trigger hypoglycemia.
Signs of hypoglycemia include sudden unusually hungry, cold sweats, and chest pounding. If not addressed, then the awareness will decrease.
Studies showed no association between hypoglycemia with cardiovascular disease risk. However, this relationship is still considered controversial. In this study, researchers from the United States, Japan, and the Netherlands analyzed six studies involving more than 903 000 with type 2 diabetes.
The study, published online in BMJ.com reveals, as much as 0.6 to 5.8 percent of patients experienced hypoglycemia after one to five years later. Overall, as much as 1.56 per cent of these patients suffering from cardiovascular disease.
According to the researchers, hypoglycemia associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease as much as two-fold. Therefore prevention of hypoglycemia is very important for diabetics to avoid cardiovascular disease.
They say, the relationship between severe hypoglycemia with increased risk of cardiovascular disease is explained by the many diabetics who are also experiencing hypoglycemia cardiovascular disease. However, the mechanism between the two can not be explained.
Nevertheless, the researchers said the risk of diabetics who experience hypoglycemia against fatal diseases is very high. And they believe the relationship between the two is very strong.
